Hypatia – The Adversary EP

Hypatia returns with a bold and gritty 5 song peak-time techno EP. “The Adversary” pens a new chapter in the landscape of American techno.  This apocalyptic opus paints an empire in decline coupled with the rising threat of violence and oppression against the LGBT community.  Since its inception, techno has been a reflection of the self in context to an an ever-changing society dominated by machines, technology, and capital.  The acceptance of this reality and the vision forward, no matter how bleak, is fully expressed in this distorted corpus.

“The Adversary” begins the EP with a bowling rumble that descends through a crack in the foundations of the earth into a chorus of damned souls.  A hardcore lead stabs like the gnashing of teeth in shredding variations.

“Escapement” is the mechanism of no return.  Hypatia’s classical training propels this techno trance lead to spaces beyond the gravity and comfort of the tonic base.  Her melodic engineering navigates like a well oiled transmission through massive harmonic gear shifts.

“Range Day” is the gloomy realization of necessary defense towards hopeless hostilities.  A portrait of America’s underrepresented leftist gun culture, live samples and a shaky metallic lead represent the grave fundamental need for self preservation and hitting the mark.

“Rover” powers up Hypatia’s pension for post techno breaks in a spastic cavalcade of mechanical samples.  Unrelenting shrill pads and grating squelch hooks search and destroy through the crumbling vehicle dependent infrastructure.

“Toluene” drips like a solvent suspending a new psychedelic alkaloid in a covert act of clandestine sound chemistry.  The collapse of healthcare ushers in a new era of DIY shamanic visionaries healing the wounds of trauma with new chemical technologies.
